Ah Xian utilizes traditional Chinese influence in his work, much of which coming from the Ming and Qing dynasties.  Having left China for Australia after the 1989 incident at Tiananmen Square, Ah Xian’s work distinctly depicts his Chinese heritage and identity.  Each piece shows intricate designs worked onto a bust, as if tattooed in place.  This image creates a sense that a person’s heritage remains, even when he or she is displaced from home.
